Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents that no fires are allowed at this time due to a Restricted Fire Zone.

This comes after fire crews were called to a bonfire in the community Monday evening, and while it was supervised, it was revealed there was no burn permit, which prior to June 1st were required for a fire in the community.

But since the implementation of the RFZ all burn permits have been suspended.

Charges from this incident are now pending.

The service also notes this is the third incident either observed or reported in the municipality since last week.

Penalties for an infraction under the Forest Fire Prevention Act include a fine up to $25,000, three months in jail, and/or having to pay the costs to extinguish the fire.
