Saint Andrews-area fire now ‘under control’

There is more good news when it comes to the Stein Lake forest fire in the Saint Andrews area.

The fire was listed as “under control” as of Monday morning, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

About a dozen firefighters remained at the scene on Monday continuing to put out hotspots.

Fortunately, crews have been getting help over the past few days from much-needed rain.

The blaze broke out on May 28 after an ATV caught fire off South Glenelg Road in Chamcook.

It quickly became a massive forest fire, burning an estimated 540 hectares of land and forcing hundreds from their homes.

The evacuation order was lifted two days later, on May 30. At the time, the fire was still considered “out of control” but officials said it was “manageable” and not growing.

Crews spent days building a fire line around the blaze, which was finally considered “contained” on the weekend.
