Pride Month is here and with incidents of hate on the rise, the federal government is stepping up to make events safer for everyone.
Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien announced today that the federal government is giving $1.5 million to Fierté Canada Pride to distribute to pride organizations around the country. The money will be used to cover the cost of security services needed for events and to provide security training for volunteers.
Hate towards the LGBT community has been growing in Canada. People are destroying pride flags and threatening violence to people who organize and attend drag events. Ien says Canadians need to wake up to the reality that the community faces on a daily basis.
