All HRM school open again as of Tuesday, June 6

Many students across the Halifax Regional Municipality were kept home from school last week as the Tantallon fire forced multiple closures. All of those schools will now be open again as of Tuesday.

Most of the schools reopened Monday, but after passing air quality inspections to ensure their safety, the four remaining schools Bay View High, Hammonds Plains Consolidated, Kingswood Elementary, and Madeline Symonds Middle School will be back open too. although, it will not be learning as usual.

Instead, support staff will be on site to help students deal with the effects of the Tantallon wildfire.

“Our focus in the coming days will be on reconnecting with students, listening and healing,” said HRFE Regional executive director Steve Gallagher in a press release.

Attendance will also be optional. If students feel more comfortable staying home there will be no repercussions for doing so.

The evacuation order has been lifted for the following area:

As of 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 5 – the Upper Hammonds Plains area (Phase 2)

Access to the area is now available via Pockwock Road. The following roadways are not accessible and residents cannot return to properties on the streets in the area of significant impact: Bonsai Drive, Cypress Court and Yew Street.

As soon as it is safe to do so, Nova Scotia Power will reconnect power to these communities. The power will be restored later this evening.

Starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, through-traffic will be permitted along Hammonds Plains Road. Police and security will be ensuring no traffic will be permitted into the evacuation area from Hammonds Plains Road. Those travelling on this road are reminded to reduce speed, as first responders continue to operate in the area.

The area of ​​significant impact located within Phase 3, is not expected to be opened for approximately 6 to 10 days.
