What will summer weather be like in the Maritimes?

By Allan Dearing Jun 2, 2023 | 6:15 AM

Meteorological summer is now underway, so what kind of season can we expect in the Maritimes?

The Weather Network unveiled its summer forecast this week.

Meteorologist Doug Gilham believes temperatures will be near normal overall with a trend toward warmer than average by late summer.

“Daytime temperatures should be close to seasonal for the summer. But that’s not because we’re going to have normal temperatures every day. We’re gonna have these periods of hot weather and periods when it’s quite a bit cooler,” notes Gilham.

Following a dry spring across the region, Gilham is cautiously optimistic that summer precipitation will be close to average.

“A few systems could overachieve and tip those final numbers to wetter than normal –  a lot like we saw last summer. It wasn’t necessarily a rainy summer but we had above-average precipitation.”

While a less active hurricane season is expected, Gilham adds the risk of significant impacts from tropical systems is still possible.
