Murray ready to take over the reigns of the Muse

By Tim Davidson Jun 2, 2023 | 2:24 PM

A person that has worked at Lake of the Woods Museum for the past 13 years as an educator and curator is its new director.

Braden Murray takes over from Lori Nelson.

Murray says he’s looking forward to the challenge.

“The last few years, it became really apparent to me that, being in a position to lead this organization would be a great experience…a great thing,” Murray reflected in a recent interview.

“It wasn’t the original plan when I moved here to Kenora but I’ve been won over quite frankly.”

Murray will oversee operations at both the Museum and the Douglas Family Arts Center, which he admits will be learning experience for him.

“Directing both the Museum and the (Douglas Family) Arts Center, it’s a bit difficult for me because I’m not the art guy.  I’ve worked at art galleries and I go to them while on vacation, but the technical back end details are not something I’m super-familiar with.  So luckily we have a great staff over there and we work closely with them.  And it feels like I’m learning every day.”

Lori Nelson has been at the helm of the museum for the past 34 years and retires next month.

Robert Bulman is chair of the Muse board and says they did a search right across Canada for the new director.

Braden was the unanimous selection of the committee, not only because he was the best candidate, but he has shown a true commitment to Kenora and the community here. Braden has big shoes to fill with Lori’s retirement, but we are excited with the skills that Braden brings to The Muse and what the future holds”.

Murray’s appointment took place on May 15th.
