Thunder Bay Police are attempting to determine if phone calls, which are spoofing the service’s phone numbers, are part of a prank or a scam.

Police say local phone numbers in the city have been contacted by unknown callers using spoofed police phone numbers.

Caller ID may display the actual number or simply ‘Thunder Bay Police Service’.

Residents should be advised even caller ID can be spoofed and they should verify the identity of the caller, and that you have the lawful right to question and officer who contacts you to verify their identity to you.

According to the service most police-issued phone numbers will appear on your caller display as ‘unknown’ or ‘private’.

If you have any questions or concerns about someone claiming to be a member of the Thunder Bay Police Service calling you, please contact their non-emergency line at (807) 684-1200.
