Thunder Bay to benefit from WestJet strategy

By Adam Riley May 30, 2023 | 3:00 AM

Officials with the Thunder Bay Airport says a new strategy by WestJet will open up connectivity.

Currently the airline flies twice a day between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, which are timed to line up for connections to western Canada.

Starting this fall WestJet will be expanding its flight options out of Winnipeg to include 5 flights per week to Atlanta.

“WestJet’s new schedules provide Thunder Bay travelers with strong options to the west and south”, says President and CEO Ed Schmidtke of the Thunder Bay International Airports Authority. “We appreciate the efforts of WestJet and the Winnipeg Airport Authority to time these flights to include great connectivity for Thunder Bay”.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is considered one of the busiest airports in the world, with more than 1,000 daily departures.

Additionally a code share WestJet has with Delta allows for flights to Los Angeles three times a week.

“We pride ourselves on being a regional hub and, with the support of our partners at WestJet, are excited to offer more connections to more places that matter,” said Winnipeg Airports Authority President and CEO Nick Hays. “Whether for business or pleasure, passengers from Thunder Bay and beyond will enjoy a seamless and convenient transfer through Winnipeg Richardson International Airport en route to a
world of possibilities. We look forward to welcoming more of our neighbours from Northern Ontario as they include us in their travels.”
