By Adam Riley May 23, 2023 | 12:33 AM

On Friday officials with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Aviation and Forest Fire Management said things would likely change over the weekend and they weren’t wrong.

The warm and sunny days parts of the Northwest had over the past 72 hours shifted the region to a moderate to high fire hazard with a small patch of extreme in the Armstrong area.

However despite the conditions only two new fires cropped up over the weekend.

Red Lake 2, just south of North Spirit Lake, was discovered late Saturday evening at 0.1 hectares in size and listed as under control.

Elsewhere, Sioux Lookout 4 was discovered Monday evening in Wawakapewin First Nation, near the shoreline of Long Dog Lake.

The 0.1 hectare fire is listed as not under control, it joins Sioux Lookout 3 which has been burning since last week.

Adding these three active fires in the region, so far this season the total number of fires sits at 20.
