Spellers raise funds for literacy

By Tara Clow May 18, 2023 | 7:05 AM

Five teams put their heads together to come up with the right letters for some tough words at the fourth annual Spelling Bee for Literacy.

It was held Wednesday night at the Dan Bohan Centre in Riverview.

Reigning champs from the Town of Riverview were victorious once again.

Town Councillors Sarah Murphy, Jeremy Thorne and Heath Johnson spelled the most correct words again this year.

All of the funds raised go to support the Moncton Regional Learning Council.

According to the Council, levels of health literacy in Canada are even lower than the levels of prose literacy – over 60% of Canadians are estimated to have low health literacy skills.
Sixty percent of adults in Canada are unable to obtain, understand and act upon health information and services and to make appropriate health decisions on their own.
Seniors, immigrants and unemployed people have, on average, lower levels of health literacy skills.
