It’s a big day for the Yarmouth Mariners in Manitoba.
The team will play their first ever Centennial Cup game at 5:30 against the Brooks Bandits.
The Mariners are the underdogs, as they open the tournament against the top ranked team in the country.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says they want to shock the hockey world.
“Our slogan is ‘Respect All, Fear None.’ We respect them, but we’re going to go in and show them what we’ve got. There’s no pressure, this is a great opportunity for us,” said Barron.
The game will be shown at Mariners Centre, and Barron says he knows many fans will be supporting them.
On their way to the hotel when they arrived in Manitoba, their bus broke down, and the players had to lug all their gear onto a new bus after a delay.
Barron likened the experience to overcoming adversity.
“We kind of laughed to ourselves, my grandfather used to say a bad start means a good finish, so look out.”
He says they’ll carry that mindset into today’s game.
Yarmouth’s next game is tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 against the Timmons Rock.
