By Ryan Forbes May 11, 2023 | 10:36 AM

An officer with the Ontario Provincial Police has passed away and two others are in the hospital after a shooting in the Bourget area, about 50 km away from downtown Ottawa.

The OPP say the three officers responded to a disturbance at a Laval Street home just after 2 a.m. today, after someone reported a gunshot.

When officers arrived, police say all three were shot by someone within the home. The three were taken to the hospital in Ottawa, and one has died. The two others are recovering at this time.

Police note one person has been arrested and there is no danger to the public. Officers from the Ottawa Police Service are on scene as support.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique has identified the fallen officer as Sergeant Eric Mueller.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that I regretfully advise that OPP Sgt. Eric Mueller has been killed in the line of duty. We anxiously await for further word on his fellow officers who are still at hospital.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared his thoughts with those affected.

“The death of OPP Sgt. Eric Mueller, who was senselessly killed in the line of duty, is devastating news. My thoughts are with his family and friends. May God bless our heroes in uniform.”

Federal Conservative leader Pierre Polievre asked Canadians to mourn and pray for those involved.

“Most of us will never know the risk police officers take every single day when they say goodbye to their families and go to work. We must never take their sacrifice for granted.”
