Lake levels on the rise

Rainy Lake

The International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board is watching closely water levels in the Rainy Lake basin.

Both Rainy and Namakan Lakes have been rising in recent weeks.

The board cites higher than normal flows in the headwaters caused by late April’s snowfall and precipitation.

Namakan Lake’s level is now higher than where it should be at this time of the year, and that could impact the level of Rainy Lake.

The board notes that the dam at Kettle Falls has been fully open since May 2.

The dam at Kettle Falls has been fully open since May 2.

Rainy Lake continues to be within its water level targets.

The board says dam operators will open gates, as required, to stay within those targets.

No advisories or flood warnings have been issued as the board continues to monitor.
