Funds needed for hospice beds at Pinecrest

The Pinecrest Home for the Aged is hoping to open three new hospice beds later this year.

Mike Limerick is a nurse practitioner at the long term care home and says there is a definite need for palliative care in the community.

“We could support six hospice beds in Kenora based on the surrounding area and the numbers of  people that we help with end of life treatment here,” says Limerick.

“Currently we have established one bed and we’re working to expand to four beds right now.”

Claire Noseworthy is one of the volunteers says they need to raise a lot of money to build the hospice rooms.

“The government will provide some funds, but they don’t cover the renovations that are required at Pinecrest or the furnishings.  That money money has to come from donations.  So that’s a lot of money for three rooms, and I think it cost us $20,000 to do the one bed.”

To help raise funds for the hospice rooms, a fundraising walk is taking place on Wednesday, May 10th at noon at Pinecrest.

Pledge forms are available by contacting Sharon McIsaac at 468-4454.
