Evacuation efforts continue in Sudan for Canadians as the country’s army and rival paramilitary force remain at odds.

Defense Minister Anita Anand spoke about what is unfolding when speaking in Dartmouth today.

“The situation is dangerous, it is volatile, it is intense and we need to do whatever we can to ensure the safety and security of Canadians,” Anand said.

Two flights were planned for Friday morning, but one ran into mechanical issues. Safety also remains a concern after a Turkish flight came under fire.

Anand said they are working very closely with allies as well as members of the military and other officials, to evacuate as many Canadians as they can, who want to leave the area.

She says about 250 Canadians have already evacuated, with more flights leaving as soon as possible.
