Fort Frances Fire Chief Tyler Moffitt jailed as part of the Voyageur Lions Club's Jail or Bail in 2018

Lions ready to throw the gavel at Jail or Bail

By Randy Thoms Apr 28, 2023 | 1:43 PM

The Voyageur Lions Club is ready to throw the gavel at several prominent residents.

Fifteen suspects will be brought up on trumped-up charges as part of Jail or Bail.

Member Bill Michl says it is all in fun to raise money.

“We go around and try to find celebrities in the community. We serve them with a little summons that has some made-up charge by a friend or a relative, something that’s not too embarrassing, but they’ll remember when they hear the charge,” says Michl.

“We have them before the judge, and while they’re charged, we ask them to raise a minimum of $300 bail. The judge could find them in contempt and throw them in a little longer. People could walk by and want them in a little longer pay to do so.”

Michl says they also have an officer ready to arrest somebody on the scene.

Saturday’s event is part of the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce’s Business and Community Expo at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

It will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The money raised by the convicted felons will go toward the splash park project in Fort Frances.
