An inmate at Dorchester Penitentiary has died of apparent natural causes.

In a statement, the Correctional Service of Canada said the inmate died on Saturday and the individual can’t be named under a court-ordered publication ban to protect the identity of victims.

Since November 2015, the inmate had been serving a 14-year sentence (plus five months and 17 days) for several offences including acts of gross indecency, attempted rape and assault causing bodily harm.

Family members have been notified.

As in all inmate deaths, the Correctional Service said it will review the circumstances.

Police and the coroner have also been contacted.
