The Yarmouth Mariners are two wins away from an MHL championship.

Ben Roode scored with under 3 minutes left, and the Mariners added an empty netter to defeat Edmundston 7-5 in Game 2 of the league final at Mariners Centre.

The game was an official sell-out, as the Mariners won their 10th straight playoff game.

Roode finished the game with four points and was named first star of the game.

Ryan Semple scored twice, Alex Roode, Reid Vos, Nathan Kelly and Andrew Stuckless also had goals, and Joey Lovullo made 24 saves.

Yarmouth got out to a 3-0 lead early in the second, but the Blizzard made it 3-2 soon after.

The Mariners went up by two again, and Edmundston would score the next three of the game to take the lead in the third period.

Vos’ goal tied it on the powerplay, before Roode’s late heroics.

The 20-year-old defender said it was a great team win.

“It was an electric crowd tonight, and fun to be a part of. We love the fans, they’ve given us great support. Especially tonight, the building was rocking. I fired that puck through late, and luckily it went in,” said Roode.

Now the series shifts to Edmundston for Games 3, 4 and potentially 5 starting this Thursday.

Mariners Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says they continue to build off each win.

“Hats off to this group. They are resilient and found a way tonight. It was a very memorable playoff game, we got off to a great start, but (Edmundston) just kept firing back. I’m very proud of the team. It won’t be easy up there, but we’ve been great on the road this season. We’ll take it one game at a time, and we’ve put ourselves in the best possible spot,” said Barron.

The Mariners will host a public skate Tuesday night at 6:30 before they hit the road.
