The Public Service Alliance of Canada has voted in favour to strike affecting more than 120,000 public servants. It would mean over 155,000 workers would be on strike, with the addition of workers from the Canada Revenue Agency.
National President Chris Aylward said the members have been without a contract since 2021, with the majority of them women, who make between $40,000 and $65,000 a year.
“The bills can’t wait, their families can’t wait, their futures can’t wait. So, they are sending a message to the government that they won’t be taken for granted. They won’t fall further behind and that they are ready to fight for better,” said Aylward.
Wages are the main concern as they fight for an increase. Aylward said they’ve seen nothing but disrespect at the bargaining table.
The services that would be affected should the strike go ahead, include, the processing of immigration applications, employment services, it would cause delays at the airport as well as the border, to name a few.
PSAC are currently negotiating with the Treasury Board until Friday which mean workers could be on strike by the end of the week.
