A fire broke out at the Halifax Public Gardens’ Horticultural Hall last night.

At around 11 p.m. crews responded to a fire inside the hall and managed to extinguish it without any being injured.

Halifax Regional Police are investigating the fire, which they are calling suspicious. It is the second time in under a year that the Horticultural Hall has caught fire.

Last September, Fire and emergency services responded to a fire at the hall that was later determined to be arson. No one was injured in that fire either.

The September fire came only a couple months after the Public Gardens were vandalised overnight. In an unexplainable act, more than 30 trees were damaged by a process known as girdling, in which a band of bark is removed from a tree which can ultimately kill it.

Police are still searching for the culprit of the vandalism as well as September’s arson. A $50,000 reward is offered for information that may lead to the arrest of those responsible.
