By Brad Perry Apr 7, 2023 | 9:30 PM

A fire on Good Friday destroyed a popular Sackville restaurant and forced several university students out of their homes.

Firefighters were called to a building at the corner of York Street and Ford Avenue on Friday morning.

The building housed Joey’s Pizza & Pasta, a community landmark since 1988, and several apartment units.

Four students and one staff member from Mount Allison University were displaced by the fire, the university said in a Facebook post.

“We will support them by arranging short-term accommodation at a local hotel or in a campus residence, as may be necessary, at university expense,” said the post.

“Staff are also working to obtain laptops, clothing and other personal items that the individuals affected may require.”

Officials said about 20 students living nearby were also impacted and had left their homes due to the smoke.

The university said no one was injured in the fire, which began around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Joey’s Pizza & Pasta also took to Facebook thanking everyone for all the support they received on Friday and over the past 35 years.

“We’re very grateful that nobody was injured and all tenants made it out safely,” said the Facebook post.

“As we navigate this difficult transition one thing is for sure, we will keep the spirit of Joey’s alive as we move forward one day at a time.”

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
