Riverview Council divided over ATV street access

By Allan Dearing Mar 30, 2023 | 6:30 AM

Riverview could eventually allow all-terrain vehicles to access some streets leading to services like restaurants and gas stations.

However, town staff have not recommended the idea and council has been divided on the issue.

During a Committee of the Whole meeting this week, councillor Cecile Cassista said she has noise and liability concerns about going ahead with a proposed bylaw.

“We have them on Whitepine Road. We have them on Trites Road. People are telling me they can’t even sit out in their yard – that’s how bad it is.”

If such a bylaw is approved, town staff noted how another bylaw enforcement officer would have to be hired in order to enforce it.

Councillor Heath Johnson was in favour and noted how ATV users who break the rules will continue to do so with or without a bylaw.

“This will give some options to people who have invested money in this as a hobby. This potentially goes and brings some economic benefit to businesses around town.”

RCMP told council that officers would not take on the liability of chasing ATV users who are breaking the law.

A motion will come before council at their next regular meeting in April.
