The Mayor of Yarmouth welcomes the new ‘Road Trails Act’ from the province.

It will allow municipalities to choose roads that registered ATV and off-highway vehicles can access to connect trails.

Pam Mood says this would apply to Water Street, something the town has wanted for years.

“We have been trying so hard to find a way for the province to allow us to do this. It’s not the town’s prerogative, we can’t allow it legally. We’ve been waiting for them to step-in, and they have with this new act,” said Mayor Mood.

She says before the bill passes through the legislature, the town will look at what areas they’ll allow access to.

Mood says safety is the top priority.

“We want to see what this looks like. We’ll be talking with Public Works and the RCMP. Keeping in mind for folks that are nervous about this, it’s about fully insured and licensed folks, that are responsible. RCMP would be out in full force.”

In recent years, the town applied to be part of a pilot project to allow off-highway vehicles on provincial roads, but did not make the cut.

Mood says she’s excited about the economic benefits this could bring to the town.
