Council approves Moncrief Sign

Kenora City Council has granted an exemption to Moncrief Construction which wants to put a sign up on the Kenora Rec. Center.

Moncrief recently signed a 15 year, 25 thousand dollar a year agreement for naming rights to the facility.

Andrew Smith is the General Manager of Recreation and Culture for the city and says the back-lit sign shouldn’t cause any concerns for the local neighborhood.

“The lights outside of homes are actually are more than likely a lot brighter than that and we do have our baseball lights down the road, that are going to be a lot brighter too,” Smith told city council last week.

“It’s fairly common in every rec. facility that you have large signage, if your are selling naming rights to it.  If there are issues, it could be deemed intrusive, as there is going to be lighting.”

Smith says if the city didn’t approve the sign exemption, there is a chance Moncrief might not go through with the naming agreement.
