A proposal to merge the town and county of Antigonish has been put on pause.

It comes after a meeting among municipal officials and the province on Friday.

Councillors voted to dissolve the town last year, as a way to share services and save money. However, a recent poll by Mainstreet Research revealed about 70 per cent of Antigonish residents were upset with the way it was handled and wanted to vote on the issue.

Municipal officials decided community meetings were the way to go instead of holding a plebiscite, but the survey also showed major repercussions awaited elected representatives the next time residents went to the ballot box.

The poll by asked over 340 residents of the town and county if they should have a say in the merger and whether or not the decision will impact the way residents vote in future elections.
