No one was hurt after a reported explosion inside a lab at l’Université de Moncton on Saturday.

Platoon Chief Keith Guptill with the Moncton Fire Department said they responded to the scene shortly after 11 a.m.

The initial call was for a fire inside a science lab, but Guptill said dispatch updated them on the way to say there had been a small explosion.

“When they say the word explosion, there are certain pictures that we start painting in our minds for that,” Guptill told our newsroom.

“When we got there, come to find out it was not an explosion. It was just a part of how one of their machines deals with heat.”

There was a small fire in the lab which crews were able to snuff out with a pair of gloves, he said.

Guptill said the person in the building did the right thing by activating the fire alarm and calling 911.

Two people inside the building at the time were not hurt and there was no damage to the building, but the call generated a lot of emergency response activity.

“There were a number of RCMP members that show up because, with an explosion, there could be malicious intent behind something like that,” said Guptill.

The platoon chief said fire prevention officers will check over one of the machines in the lab to determine if there was a malfunction.
