The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is now a Quiet Park.

The designation comes from Quiet Parks International, a group promoting natural quiet areas around the world.

“We are thrilled to award the Wilderness Quiet Park status to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness,” says Matt Mikkelsen, Executive Director of Wilderness Quiet Parks, in a release. “The BWCAW has a dependable noise-free interval of 15 minutes or more, which is a remarkable achievement.”

The area stretches 240 kilometres along the Ontario-Minnesota border and covers more than 4,400 square kilometres of land in northeastern Minnesota.

More than 150,000 visitors are attracted to the remote wilderness area for its outdoor adventures, such as canoeing, backpacking and dog sledding.

Despite its popularity, Quiet Parks International found that the natural quiet in the BWCAW often lasts for hours.

“We hope this award encourages other wilderness areas to prioritize natural quiet and inspires people to experience the beauty of the BWCAW soundscape,” says Mikkelsen.
