A new name for ‘Cape Negro’ in Shelburne County.

It’s now called ‘Eel Bay,’ and signage has gone up in the area.

Two years ago, the province began the process of re-naming the community, and several others (Cape Negro Island, Negro Harbour and Squaw Island) that contain derogatory names.

Councillor for the area Jody Crook says the community feels the process was flawed.

“They didn’t communicate the process well, the community had the rules changed several times during consultations,” said Crook.

He says there’s no dispute the name needed to be changed, but new names the community came up with were not included on the final list.

“I think the biggest thing is to involve the community where the name change is taking place, I think that was the downfall of this process.”

In a letter to the Municipality of Barrington, the province said they plan to review the process, while respecting community decision making.
