New poll shows support for a vote on Antigonish town and county merger

A new poll reveals a majority of Antigonish residents want to be heard when it comes to a potential merger of the town and county.

The survey from Mainstreet Research shows 70 per cent of residents want a plebiscite on consolidation.

Pollster President Maggi Quito says the sample size is small and margin of error large, but all signs point to a strong yes when it comes to it whether or not residents want a say in the matter.

Municipal councillors voted in favour of the dissolving the town last year and held community engagement meetings instead of a special vote.

Amalgamation has been an ongoing debate in Antigonish for years as a way to combine municipal services.

However, a community group is fighting the way it has been handled and have taken the matter to supreme court.

The group “Let Antigonish Decide” is hoping the high court quashes councils decision and feel forcing the merger on residents is undemocratic.

The poll asked over 340 residents of the town and county if they should have a say in the merger and whether or not the decision will impact the way residents vote in future elections.
