100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John has made its latest donation to a local charity in the city.

The Saint John Community Food Basket received a cheque for $26,000 on Tuesday night from the group of generous women.

Every three months, the women hear presentations from three local charitable organizations and then vote on which one to donate to. Each woman who attends the meeting writes a cheque for $100 to the winning charity.

The food bank previously won a donation of $21,700 from the group of women in September 2017. The Sophia Recovery Centre and The Brighten Group also gave presentations.

100 Women Who Care also heard from the Salvation Army in Saint John, which received a donation of $26,950 in December.

Maj. Orest Goyak said they were able to use the funding to help employ a full-time case worker/housing worker for its 40-bed out-of-the-cold shelter on the city’s west side.

Since the shelter opened, the Salvation Army has worked with other partners to find permanent housing for 20 people.

The local chapter of 100 Women Who Care has donated more than $991,150 to 40 charities since its inception in 2013.
