Fourteen community rinks across Nova Scotia will get much needed upgrades.

The province is investing over $18 million to create more access to sport and recreation.

“Rinks are the heart of our communities,” said Brian Comer, Minister responsible for the Office of Addictions and Mental Health and MLA for Cape Breton East, on behalf of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Minister Pat Dunn. “These upgrades will enhance the experience of every player and every family member who enjoys the rink. And it is a fantastic opportunity for more girls and women to play hockey.”

The most notable include over $8 million for the Canada Games Complex at Cape Breton University for a community hockey hub for women and girls, which will be the home to the Cape Breton Blizzards Female Hockey Association and help Mi’kmaw communities access hockey programs.

The Cape Breton County Arena in Sydney will get $4.3 million for a new washroom and changeroom facilities, with energy efficient upgrades; and $1 million for The Colechester Legion Stadium in Truro after it was damaged by Hurricane Fiona.

“Increasing access and equity in sport is a big focus of ours. Giving people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities a chance to be active is critical to building a healthier province. These investments will help rinks across the province provide even more opportunities in their communities, ” said Pat Dunn, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage.
