A new 26-storey tower might be coming to downtown Dartmouth.

A developer plans to build a 142-unit, mixed-use building right where the old post office is, making the historic building, part of the 90-meter-high tower.

Any changes to the former post office would be minor with the focus to upgrade. The property was registered as a municipal heritage property in 2020. That means there are special rules that govern development on the site – including requirements that the character of the building is preserved.

Even the old clock tower would be restored and used in the new development.

RHAD Architects has submitted plans.

“Our team [chose] to locate the majority of the new development in the adjacent parking lot and on top of the 1960s ‘Annex’ addition, which is the least historically significant portion of the building,” its proposal reads. “Impacts on the original Post Office will be positive and relatively minor, with the majority of the work focusing on building code upgrades.”

Already, the Waverley Inn on Barrington Street and Victoria Hall on Gottingen Street are being altered in similar proposals.

There will be a public hearing about the project, before moving forward, with more information in early spring.
