Yarmouth Mariners to become ‘non-profit’ society next season

By Kevin Northup Mar 10, 2023 | 12:34 PM

The Yarmouth Mariners organization will soon become a non-profit society.

Team owners shared financial details with sponsors this week, and revealed that they won’t make a profit this year.

Co-owner Jared Purdy says they’ve seen first hand what the costs are, and they’re projected to have a deficit of $7,800 this season.

“It became obvious that in today’s economic climate, there’s no way to deliver this product as a viable business, and make a profit on it,” said Purdy.

He says the change for next season will allow the team to better align with its mandate.

“It opens us up to local government assistance and support programs, and it opens up opportunities in the community to form deeper partnerships.”

Purdy points out that this will make fans, volunteers and sponsors part of the ownership sphere.

He said potential government grants would offset some travel costs, as the Mariners log the most kilometres of any team in the league.

Purdy wants the fans to know that nothing will change on game nights, and they’re committed to putting out a great product on and off the ice.
