Watershed Forum underway in International Falls

By Tim Davidson Mar 8, 2023 | 5:21 PM

The Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum is taking place in-person for the first time in three years.

The forum is taking place in International Falls, Minnesota this afternoon and all day Thursday.

Todd Sellers from the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation helps organize it and says they have a full house this year.

“We’re really pleased to get back together in person,” says Sellers.

“So much of the value of these kinds of conferences, happens not only in the actual presentation sessions, but the networking and collaboration that takes place in the margins, between sessions.”

Sellers says while the high water levels last year won’t be directly discussed, the impact of climate change on the watershed is the topic of one of the sessions.

“The IJC’s (International Joint Commission) Watershed Board, has an adaptive management committee that is looking at climate change impacts in the watershed and potential adaptation activities and measures that will be needed.  So that will be a really interesting first look and some thoughts of what that all means for us in the future.”

The forum has technical papers on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy Lake drainage basin as well as an historical look at the watershed from David Malaher tonight.
