Bedford school apologizes after students told to remove cultural scarf

The regional education centre in Halifax was forced to apologize after students were told to remove cultural clothing.

It was in response to what they call an “isolated incident involving a few student” on Cultural Day last week at Park West school in Bedford.

The incident led the Palestinian community to believe that students were banned from wearing a traditional scarf in schools.

Executive Director Steve Gallagher sent an email to families on Saturday, clarifying this was not the case; after receiving thousands of emails.

“In the past few days, we have received thousands of emails from concerned families and community members – locally and across the country – calling for this “ban” to be overturned. It was a remarkable demonstration of Canada’s commitment to freedom and diversity and a privilege to witness,” wrote Gallagher. “This situation signals that there is more work to be done within our system to build trust and acceptance.”

Not many specifics are known or how many students were involved but Gallagher says members of their diversity team will be at the school to work with staff and students.
