Officials with hydro one were out in the Kaministiqua area Thursday, meeting with residents who are upset over the new Waasigan Transmission Line, which could cut through dozens of properties and homes.

For several weeks the group, Neighbours on the Line, have been pushing to have the electricity provider to appear and speak with residents over the issues the line would create for them.

Director of Strategic Projects Sonny Karunakaran says the Hydro One is happy to hear the feedback from the residents especially with one thing in particular sticking out.

“The Neighbours on the Line have come forward with an alternative route proposal for us to have a look at, we’re really pleased to see this, the discussions and the commitment we’ve had with them is that we are analyzing that route.”

Karunakaran adds feed back from all communities along the route including the midway point in Atikokan and the terminus in Dryden will help Hydro One come to a final decision on the route, which is set to begin construction next year with an in-service date set for 2025.

As part of the comparison of routes, Karunakaran notes feedback from area First Nations, the natural environment, dialogues with various levels of government and residents, as well as the technical considerations and the cost of constructing the line are the criteria that will be applied as the alternate route is examined.
