New Brunswick is the latest province to ban TikTok on government-issued mobile devices.

The popular app is being wiped from those devices immediately, the province announced Thursday.

It comes a day after the province said it was seeking more information before considering a ban.

Chief information officer Liz Byrne-Zwicker said the protection of personal info is of utmost importance.

“This decision is a precautionary measure to ensure the private information government employees have access to on a daily basis is not threatened,” Byrne-Zwicker said in a news release.

Byrne-Zwicker said the data collection methods used by TikTok enables broad access to the device’s content has been called into question by experts.

There are also concerns about the legal regime that governs the information collected by the Beijing-based company, she said.

The chief information officer noted there is no indication that any private info has been compromised through mobile devices issued by the provincial government.

Earlier this week. the federal government announced it would block the popular app on phones given to public service employee after its chief information officer found the popular social media app presents an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security.
