Fire fighters rescue man near break-wall

By Adam Riley Feb 28, 2023 | 9:30 PM

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were out in the Thunder Bay harbour this evening responding to an ice rescue around 5:30 p.m.

A caller to 911 reported a single person on the ice, who appeared to be approaching the open water near the lighthouse on the break-wall.

Fire fighters were able to visually confirm the long male, walking on the ice with difficulty, and the on scene commander ordered the deployment of the air boat from the marina boat launch, for an ice rescue.

Rescuers were able to quickly reach the man and secure him onboard the air boat, returning him safely to shore where he was treated for possible hypothermia until paramedics from Superior North EMS arrived.

It is unknown at this time if the man was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding residents the public to stay off local water bodies as warmer spring weather begins to approach, making ice conditions unpredictable and unsafe.
