Elderly couple rescued after morning house fire

By Adam Riley Feb 24, 2023 | 1:46 PM

Two people have been sent to hospital after being rescued from an early morning house fire.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue received a 911 call shortly before 1 a.m. Friday from a Markland Street residence.

The elderly caller stated both she and her husband were trapped on the second floor of the home by a main floor fire.

Crews responded quickly and were able to gain access and perform the rescue, however they were met with both limited visibility and considerable amounts of personal contents in the home.

Both residents were safely rescued and were rushed to hospital, their condition is unknown at this time.

Fire Chief Greg Hankkio says the investigation is still in its early stages.

“We have not made entry into the house at this point, so I can’t provide an assessment to the damage of the structure.”

Hankkio credits the quick response and successful rescue to having fully staffed fire halls nearby.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue wants to remind residents of the importance of keeping hallways and doorways clear.
