A Marathon woman says she is thankful to those who stopped to assist her following a collision on Highway 17 Saturday afternoon.

A pair of social media posts from Schreiber Fire indicated the incident occurred around 2 p.m. and stated a multi-vehicle collision had taken place out near Prairie River, between Terrace Bay and Marathon, and requiring multiple agencies to respond.

One of those caught up in the collision was Marathon resident Bethany Cummings, who in a post on social media, indicated when she rounded a corner, she found herself within 40 feet a tractor trailer unit, directly in her path.

“I had 2 seconds to look down and see I was in my proper lane and jerked the steering wheel which saved me from hitting it head on. I still got smoked and ended up rolling MULTIPLE times.” read her post.

Cummings says she managed to punch and crawl her way out of the vehicle through the windshield, with fortunately minor injuries.

She credits both driving a large truck and wearing a seat belt for that outcome.

A spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police says both drivers were taken to hospital for treatment, the driver of the tractor trailer unit has been charged with careless driving.
