Kenora Seeking Provincial Help For More Housing

By Tim Davidson Feb 13, 2023 | 1:32 PM

More provincial money for infrastructure should help the housing shortage in the City of Kenora.

That’s the feeling of mayor Andrew Poirier.

“Every time you go to lay underground infrastructure, guess what we hit…rock,” explains Poirier.

“We’re trying to do whatever we can, within the rules and regulations we’re bound by, to help propel some of these private sector developments.”

Poirier adds the government has eliminated the use of Development Fees for municipalities, but adds since the City of Kenora doesn’t charge any, they need different types of help to encourage housing.

“Our biggest cost is infrastructure.  If we have to extend it or upgrade it because of our topography and our geography, our costs are higher.”

Poirier met with the provincial Housing Minister Steve Clark last week when he was in Kenora, and outlined his concerns.
