New Report Outlines Cost To Fix Up Bridges

By Tim Davidson Feb 10, 2023 | 2:17 PM

It could cost anywhere from $35 million to $60 million to fix up all the bridges in Kenora over the next 10 years.

That was the information contained in a Bridge Condition Index report that city council received this week.

Mayor Andrew Poirier says the Portage Bay Bridge in Keewatin gets the lowest grade, and it will have to be rehabilitated or replaced altogether.

“Something will be done with that bridge and this was just reinforced with the updated audit, and it reaffirmed the information we were provided in the report from two years ago and from staff,” says Poirier after the Committee of the Whole meeting this week.

“It will be a hefty bill.”

Poirier adds the two bridges in Keewatin will be costly to do maintenance on over the next decade.

“There will be millions spent on that bridge (Portage Bay Bridge) and the Keewatin (Channel) Bridge, which the Keewatin Channel bridge is a downloaded bridge on our community and we’re probably going to spend 4 to five million dollars on it to refurbish the underneath part.”

The cost to rehabilitate the Portage Bay Bridge has been estimated at $10 million or $34 million to replace.
