Campbellton Fire Displaces Up To 30 People

By Brad Perry Feb 9, 2023 | 10:42 AM

As many as 30 people, including several college students, have been forced from their homes after a fire in northern New Brunswick.

The blaze broke out in a 14-unit building on O’Leary Street around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Canadian Red Cross.

Spokesperson Dan Bedell said in a news release that the older three-storey building was destroyed in the fire.

“Tenants of three apartments from [an] adjacent building were also temporarily evacuated due to proximity to smoke and flames from the burning structure,” said the release.

The organization arranged emergency lodging and meals for 30 people on Wednesday night. Tenants of the adjacent building are expected to be allowed back home by Thursday evening.

“For those displaced from the destroyed building, the Red Cross team is assessing additional needs such as emergency purchases of clothing and other basic items, as well as providing referrals to other agencies and community organizations for additional support.

There are no reports of any injuries and no word yet on what sparked the fire.
