Public meeting for new $65M military testing site in Hartlen Point

By Steve MacArthur Jan 31, 2023 | 10:41 AM

If you live in Eastern Passage, it’s a chance to have your say on a $65 million military testing site planned for the area.

The facility would be built around Hartlen Point, N.S. on property owned by the Department of National Defence.

It will be used as a testing grounds for new warships.

In total, 15 new Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) ships will be built for the Royal Canadian Navy. The new fleet will upgrade and replace the capabilities of the current Halifax-class frigates and retired Iroquois-class destroyers. Money to build the facility was included multibillion-dollar federal shipbuilding contract.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 jobs will be created or maintained throughout the 25-year construction period of the combat ships, and the project is expected to sustain almost 350 jobs in the Halifax region throughout the various construction phases.

Once complete, the facility will be home to 120 full-time staff, including members of the RCN, DND employees and contractors.
