CMHA Appeals For More Mental Health Funding

By Tim Davidson Jan 27, 2023 | 9:11 AM

Canadian Mental Health Association branches in Ontario are seeking an eight percent increase in their base funding from the province.

Sara Dias is executive director of the Kenora office and says because they haven’t received any extra funding for years, they are losing staff.

“We’re losing dedicated staff to the burn out and and exhaustion to (higher) paying jobs in the health sector,” Dias told the Ontario finance committee at pre-budget hearings earlier this month.

“CMHA Kenora last base budget increase was in 2018.  So we have not received a base budget increase for operating costs in over 22 years.”

The CMHA estimates 66 per cent of resignations at their Ontario branches over the last two years have been salary based decisions and increasing their base funding to all their provincial offices this year would amount to under $30 million.
