Walkway Expansion to be Considered

By Randy Thoms Jan 26, 2023 | 8:16 AM

An expansion of the LaVerendrye Parkway is being eyed by the town of Fort Frances.

Town council is being asked to approve a contract that would study the idea of extending the walking path into the former Resolute Forest Products property.

Chief Building Official and Municipal Planner Cody Vangel says it would look at several things.

“Essentially a conceptual design and feasibility study to see what routes might be available if we were to extend the parkway, identify different constraints, potential property procurement requirements, accessibility requirements,” says Vangel.

Extending the walkway was suggested by at least two residents and was incorporated as part of a conceptual plan by the property’s current owner.

Councillor David Kircher feels it may be premature to be conducting a study now without knowing what exactly will be in the area.

“We need to figure out what’s the main use of the property that walkway will be accessing,” says Kircher

The study is to cost about 70 thousand, with the town covering about 19 thousand if council gives its okay on Monday.
