$40M To Help Shellfish Operations Impacted By Fiona

By Brad Perry Jan 20, 2023 | 12:04 PM

Ottawa announced $40 million on Friday to help shellfish operations recover from Hurricane Fiona.

The funding will be provided over two years through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, or ACOA.

It will help shellfish operators and non-profits with storm damage repairs, equipment replacement, cleanup and product loss.

“Our government has been working collaboratively with hard-hit communities, sectors and businesses that suffered devastating losses as a result of this storm,” Ginette Petitpas Taylor, the minister responsible for ACOA, said in a news release.

“The support we are announcing today for the shellfish sector will help fill gaps where no other support measures are available.”

In addition, the money can be used for longer-term projects for adaptations against extreme weather.

Officials said Friday that the full extent of damages may not be known until this spring as some shellfish operations had already begun to submerge their equipment when September’s storm hit.

More details can be found on the Government of Canada’s website.
