Trudeau Responds To Premier’s Bail Letter

By Tim Davidson Jan 17, 2023 | 12:50 PM

The prime minister is stopping short of endorsing a letter sent by the premiers about reforming the bail system.

Justin Trudeau says there are a number of different factors that have be taken into consideration.

“Anytime you make a change to the bail systems, there are challenges around impacts, particularly on Indigenous or minority groups, that we have make sure we’re taking into account,” said Trudeau speaking in Saskatoon.

“We all want a system that ensures Canadians are safe in their homes and their communities.”

Trudeau says he understands there are concerns out there.

“We’re always going to put the safety of Canadians at the top of mind.  That’s what we’ve done in the various reforms we brought to the criminal justice system and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.  We understand there are some real concern out there and that’s why we’re working quickly to look at the proposal.”

Over the weekend, the premiers and territorial leaders penned a letter to the prime minister says the justice system needs to keep those who pose a threat to public safety off the streets.

The letter comes following the death of a 28 year old Ontario Provincial Police Constable who was ambushed and killed by two people, while on duty last month.
