A former Inverness man now has the top job in the Yukon.

Ranj Pillai will be sworn in as premier after winning the leadership of the Liberal Party in the territory and was uncontested.

Pillai was first elected in 2016, and has held various cabinet positions. He will take over a minority government in the Northern Territory.

Pillai went to school in Mabou and Judique but transferred to John Hugh Gillis Regional High in Antigonish.

His father, N.G. Pillai, is a well-known and retired doctor from the Inverness hospital.

A swearing in ceremony will take place on the weekend in Whitehorse.
