Ontario Provincial Police say one person was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries following a collision at the intersection of Highway 11-17 and Red River Road.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. when several pedestrians ran across the road from Red River Road to Dawson Road, unfortunately one of the pedestrians was struck by an eastbound passenger vehicle.

OPP, along with Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue and Superior North EMS attended the scene.

The collision forced the closure of the intersection for several hours as OPP Collision Reconstructionists and Technical Collision Investigators processed the scene.

The closure resulted in tractor trailer unit traffic being backed up on both Dawson Road, Red River Road and on Highway 11-17.

Police would like to thank members of the public who both called 911 and assisted at the scene.
